This suburb grew up around the railway in the 1890s, and it's still known for grand Federation homes sitting on deep, leafy garden blocks. Plenty of that housing stock is heritage-listed.

Detached houses still dominate at over seven in ten here, with newer unit blocks a more recent addition near the shopping strip. Underneath all that established character, a lot of the older streets are still running the drainage those first owners put in.

Reactive shale-and-clay ground shifts a little with every wet season, and that slow movement is enough to work a century-old clay joint loose. Once a joint opens even a hairline, moisture draws roots straight to it.
